Blog 2 and Reflection 2 (Theory)
The aim of this tutorial was to discuss Crunch&Sip in schools, and group discussions on effects of smoking, childhood and play.
The above topics will now be delineated with a personal reflection for each:
Crunch & Sip Program
This program is an initiative to get children eating and drinking healthy, as well as understanding why this is important for them. It involves teachers and staff bringing in fruit, salad and vegetables to the class each day to eat them during a set break, which helps teachers fulfil their requirement on healthy eating from the NSW PDHPE syllabus, as well as promote healthy eating awareness and its importance .
Effects of Smoking
It is commonly understood today, that smoking is injurious to the health of the smoker, as well as passive smokers who inhale second hand smoke. As such, this part of the tutorial aimed to outline the importance of NSW PDHPE syllabus points that focus on effects of smoking, and teaching this to students early in order for them to understand how it can affect their health and why it is not a good choice. Subject matter of incorporation which was of importance during this tutorial was Personal Health Choices and Indicators, including outcome PHS1.12 – identifying environmental factors that impact on health, e.g. passive smoking (New South Whales Department of Education and Communities), which is specifically appropriate for stage 1 students. What I took home from this personally was the feeling that I am looking forward to putting lots of passion into these particular topics, as it may save many lives when children decide not to smoke. I also know how difficult it is to quit smoking.
School and Play
It is commonly understood that children benefit from being able to engage in play activities freely, where they can explore their environment, learn and interact with their peers. This part of the tutorial got me thinking about psychology. As a student of psychology also, I am quite passionate about the workings of the mind. According to the child developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, children must engage in play as a means to not only explore their environment and engage with their peers, but also to advance their psychosocial development. In doing this, children are able to also experience fantasy as a means to resolve their conflicts regarding their incapability. E.g. pretend to have powers, play doctors and nurses, etc. My personal message regarding this topic is that children’s play time is of utmost importance in healthy development, as is the teaching and guiding of play safety.
